Naukowiec UŁ: DeepSeek – czy ma szansę zdetronizować ChatGPT?

The world is buzzing with news that the Chinese have built an AI model that achieves a level of precision that is similar to ChatGPT's results, while also offering huge energy savings. Software developers are praising Deep Seek to the skies. At the same time, the question arises: how does this model compare to its competitors in the eyes of language model users who work, or students who seek support in their studies.

Dr Dominik Skowroński from the Faculty of Management at the University of Lodz compares the two models.

Tools are evolving, and so is ChatGPT

At the beginning, every digital tool is a prototype, then it enters the market and next it is developed by expanding its functions. ChatGPT was no different. At first, it provided the possibility of a simple dialogue, which contained numerous errors. For example, after asking about the Operation Arsenal, we received a description of the action of... Arsenal London footballers, which ended with a goal. Currently, finding errors in the Plus version is becoming more and more challenging. Over time, new functionalities appeared:

  1. Possibility of uploading and using images, MS Office files or PDFs in conversations.
  2. Search for information on the web, along with indicating sources.
  3. GPT Assistants – a function where each of us can train artificial intelligence for specific purposes, such as filling in applications, writing regulations, and other tedious work.
  4. Voice chat – a feature that lets you talk to ChatGPT like you’re talking on the phone. The world that created by the film “Her” in 2013 where a writer fell in love with a bot, is now a reality.
  5. Tasks – a beta feature that lets you use ChatGPT for regular tasks, from asking it for music suggestions every morning to writing a summary of a press review on a chosen topic.

Some of the listed functions, despite their usefulness, are not popular, because in order to use them, it is necessary to use the Plus version. At the same time, these are functions that, from the point of view of a person who wants to make their work easier thanks to artificial intelligence, are fundamental. During the training sessions that I conduct, many people are surprised by the extent to which ChatGPT itself can support them in their work

– underlines Dr Dominik Skowroński.

How does Deep Seek compare to this?

Deep Seek does just as well as ChatGPT. It shows a wide range of factors, along with the key ones. At the same time, of the functions listed above, only file uploading and web searching can be found at the moment.

At the same time, when I wanted to upload a PDF file that contained images, Deep Seek asked me to separate images from the text, which in this case would require… having an editable version of the file or using a tool like ChatGPT to separate these elements. On the other hand, when I wanted to search for current news from the web, Deep Seek responded that it had data up to October 2023

– says Dr Dominik Skowroński.

Thus, from the point of view of someone who uses language models on a daily basis at work but is not a programmer, Deep Seek is currently not an alternative, because its functionality is limited. It may attract at most because it is free and conducts conversations at the level of other models. At the same time, it should be noted that Deep Seek has not yet established itself on the market. Who knows what its fate will be when it starts to be developed. Maybe the company will focus on developing towards the IT industry, which already praises Deep Seek, or maybe over time we will see equivalents of the functions that can be found in competing models and this tool will become of interest to a wider audience.

The article has been written based on proprietary tests that compare the functions of ChatGPT with Deep Seek.
